Despite this large figure, the increasing costs of other school necessities, like energy (which saw a 60.8% rise1), have forced schools to allocate funds elsewhere, often at the expense of learning materials. This shift exacerbates the problem, widening the gap between what schools receive in funding and what is needed to maintain quality education.
As a consequence, students in many schools face a shortage of resources, limiting their opportunities to fully benefit from their education. The financial pressures also mean that many schools cannot invest in modern digital tools, which are increasingly crucial in today’s learning environment. This situation highlights the urgent need for increased funding that aligns with the true costs of providing high-quality education in the UK.
Another challenge facing UK secondary schools is the size of classes. With increasing student numbers and insufficient funding to hire more teachers, classrooms are becoming overcrowded. In 2023, the average pupil-to-teacher ratio in secondary schools in England was 16.7 : 12. This ratio has increased from 15.5 : 1 in 20102, reflecting the growing student population without a proportional increase in teaching staff. In 2020, the average secondary school class size reached 22 students, the highest level in 19 years. Moreover, nearly 1 million secondary students were in classes with 31 or more pupils, a situation that has worsened over the past decade3.
Large class sizes make it difficult for teachers to provide the individual attention that students need to thrive. The one-size-fits-all approach that often results from overcrowded classrooms leaves many students behind, particularly those with special educational needs or learning disabilities. This trend underscores the urgent need for more productive educational funding to ensure that class sizes remain manageable and conducive to effective learning.
